VETERANS TREATMENT COURT

VETERANS TREATMENT COURT *

Veterans Court provides a specialized track for veterans with misdemeanor or felony convictions, offering treatment specifically tailored to their needs. To be eligible, defendants must have prior or current military service & a mental health issue related to that service, such as PTSD, traumatic brain injury, or military sexual trauma. While combat trauma is not required, there must be a clear connection between the criminal offense & the service-related mental health condition.

Participants are carefully screened & placed into programs designed to help them manage mental health challenges and successfully reintegrate into civilian life. Many veterans face significant hurdles when readjusting after deployment, which can sometimes lead to substance abuse or legal issues. To support their recovery, participants are closely monitored through regular court hearings & receive assistance from the VA and other community organizations.

This program is a collaborative effort between the Superior Court, District Attorney's Office, Defense Bar, treatment providers, the VA’s Veteran Justice Office & the California Veterans Legal Task Force. Before being accepted, each case must be screened and approved by a selection committee that meets twice per month. Please note that cases involving arson, or sex offender registration are not eligible for this program.

This is a very worthwhile program for our Chapter 75 members to support. Currently, members Joe Hudak, Susan Inot & Pat Russell participate. More volunteer mentors are needed. Anyone who is interested may contact Pat, Joe or Susan for further information. The court meets on Monday mornings at the San Diego Superior Court, Room 1701.
